Sure, Random Access Memories is a brilliantly engineered masterpiece dedicated to the 70's and 80's, but it isn't a masterpiece dedicated to the future...of the 70's and 80's.

Discovery, to me, is Daft Punk's best album. They just let loose on this album; allowing their childhood fascination with disco and funk take over and create their take on the sounds of the future. The hints of Chic on "Homework" are further developed to glitzy, almost self-parodying, edges, without the refinement of "Random Access Memories".

Songs such as "Something About Us" and "Digital Love" sound like original ideas, while obviously mimicking the styles that Thomas and Guy-Man grew with. The duo really shine when making dance music like "Short Circuit" and "High Life", they sound as good in a dark room as they do in a disco.

The first few parts of the album are like a journey; journeys into different aspects of Daft Punk's musicality as children. Everything from glam rock to hard house is hit upon in those first four tracks that start the album, each offering a slice of the future that RAM doesn't exactly touch upon. "Aerodynamic"'s crazy guitar solos segue into the love melodies of "Digital Love" which turn into the mad catchiness of "Harder Better Faster Stronger".

Oh, and "One More Time" is on this.

I would also call it the most disappointing album release of the last 10 years.

Sure it's interesting and it's excellently produced, however it is fucking boring.

Just IMHO.

RAM or Disco?

I'd agree with RAM; it was too refined as a whole, and didn't feel fun or exciting compared to this.

Discovery is excellent. I will admit I wasn't into Daft Punk until my coworker played RAM all the way through. I loved it, well most of it. I can't stand the two songs that Pharrel guy sings. After a while of RAM I decided to branch out into their discography and listen to Discovery. Now, I also believe Discovery is better than RAM. I don't really like their earlier stuff though.

Great album, I also love the movie (Interstella 5555) that goes along with it:

Discovery and Homework are much better IMO than RAM, in fact the album I play most is Alive 2007, just the way every sing melds into each other is fantastic, plus there's the energy of it playing live.

That's what I'm listening to right now! In reality I went from RAM to Alive 2007 and from there went to Discovery.

You can play it for pretty much any party any time anywhere.

RAM grows on you a bit with each listen. Discovery amazes you from the first track to the last (well, Too Long is too long, still).

I think Discovery, along with Sgt. Pepper's, DSotM, and The Low End Theory, really changed the way I looked at music; more so since I was 11 when I first heard it.

Oooh, alright.

RAM got Daft Punk the mainstream recognition it really deserved, but lost its robot soul for me. It's ironic how such an elaborate album doesn't sound as good as the ones made by two French kids playing around.

I really find "Alive 2007" as their best album so far. While I like most of their songs, the melding of two songs in each track made it great, and whereas I uniformly hate live performance albums, I almost didn't notice in that album.

The mashup of "Around The World" and "Harder Better Faster Stronger" is probably my favorite track of theirs—you can almost feel the audience intensity—and represents all of Daft Punk's career in one song.
